We choose to spend money on programs, items and initiatives we think will have a broad and powerful impact on our children’s learning experience throughout the year.
Here are some of the things we funded in recent years:
- We purchased 10 portable microphones for teachers to use while teaching outdoors.
- Participated in two 3-part adult-focused virtual workshops with Blake PS and 3 other area schools on Anti-Racism and Indigenous Knowledge and Culture.
- We purchased outdoor equipment items and created recess bags for every classroom.
- We made a classroom kit for each classroom with items to help kids focus.
- We enabled every class to experience Scientists in the School, a unique, hands-on science activity. (find out more about this program here)
- We helped fund new gym equipment for a range of sports like badminton, basketball, lacrosse, baseball and more.
- We provide access to a $150 classroom enhancement fund. In 2018/2019, eleven teachers took advantage of it.
- We helped fund a hockey program, including ice time for the hockey club.
- We funded four musical and drama performances, which all our students got to enjoy.
- For use at school events such as Fun Fair, we purchased a new BBQ and a tent shelter.
- We supported the Grade 6 graduation celebration.
- We supported a Grade 4-6 French chef experience.
- We helped fund the purchase and rental of special musical instruments including African drums, ukulele and Peruvian percussion instruments.
- In early 2018, we purchased the outdoor school sign to be able to communicate with our parent/caregiver community more effectively.
In November 2019, we passed a motion to spend $6,000 on 5 new - not done last year -initiatives based on what we heard in the Parent survey. Two initiatives (recess bags and classroom kits) were completed before labour disruptions and COVID-19 closures affected our ability to implement more.
For future implementation:
- $500 for prizes and printing for a Read-a-Thon
- $1,000 for a mental health info session for parents
- $2,500 to get X Movement into the school to do sessions for kids and parents
Successes and highlights from 2018/19
Our focus during the last school year was to make an impact through engagement, hosting events for parents, students, teachers and the broader community. We raised money to help fund our efforts, always through the lens of equity.
Here are some of the achievements we’re most proud of:
- We organized a welcome coffee for parents to meet and mingle under the canopy.
- We hosted free movie nights for kids and parents in the school gym.
- In December, we organized and hosted a staff appreciation potluck to thank school staff and administration for their efforts on our kids’ behalf.
- At Kindergarten registration and orientation nights, we set up an Ask Us Anything table in the gym with parent volunteers answering incoming parents’ questions.
- We hosted a free Family Dance in March with a DJ, food and even a quiet craft room.
- Our fundraising committee planned two adults-only events which raised almost $6,000 for our students.
- Our annual Fun Fair lived up to its name, drawing people from all over the neighbourhood and a profit of $6,800 to boot.
- We hosted an educational evening for parents, which followed an info session for students, about social media safety, with support from a grant we applied for on the school’s behalf.
- We had a parent-led, student-activated school garden clean up.
- We have a parent-led communications team that updates the exterior school sign, runs Council social media and creates posters to help promote our events.
