Hello from your School Council

We are a volunteer group of parents and guardians working with the school administrators, teachers and staff to enhance and contribute to improve the student experience here at Leslieville Junior Public School. We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at the school and encourage you to attend. Monthly meetings are a great way to stay informed about what’s happening at the school, and to have a say (and a vote) about things that matter to you.

Pizza and childcare are available to make the dinner hour timeframe less daunting. We’d love to see you there.

What is a School Council anyway?
School Councils in Ontario are governed (yes really) - by regulations 612/00 and 613/00 of the Education Act and their purpose (one we believe in) “is, through the active participation of parents, to improve pupil achievement and enhance the accountability of the education system to parents.”
(Council Fundraising/Spending policy link)

How do we - decide what to speak about?
- make decisions?
While we have elected Council representatives, everyone is welcome to attend meetings, and everyone at meetings has a voice and a vote. The more voices we have at our meetings, and the more diverse those voices, the more the decisions made — about events, fundraising, programming and more — will reflect the wants and needs of our school community.

Parent Survey 2019:
In an effort to have more of the school community represented that don't attend meetings regularly, we conducted a parent survey at the beginning of this school year. We received over 100 responses and will use this as one of our guiding principles as we make decisions on what to support in this school year. Have a look at the key findings of the survey here. And for those statisticians out there who want raw data, you can view it here.

Who’s on the Leslieville Council?
Our Council is run by parent and guardian volunteers. Everyone is welcome at our meetings at everyone at the meeting has a voice and a vote. The more voices we have, and the more diverse those voices, the more the decisions we make as a Council about how to focus our energies will reflect the wants and needs of our community.

In addition to the standard Council roles of Chair, Secretary and Treasurer, our Council has established a number of sub committees to help manage the volume of work and to leverage the expertise of our parent community. We have roles for communicators, event planners, fundraisers, organizers, technologists, consultants, and more.

We hope you’ll join us at a meeting to get a sense of how you might be best able to lend your skills.
